Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and make it more engaging.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and type of notice. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they're remembered and to ensure that their life story is told accurately. This can be a therapeutic exercise and a unique opportunity for self-reflection.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often without additional biographical information. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more details about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include stories, quotes, or humorous moments that capture their personality and spirit.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required).

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or corrections within a certain timeframe, while others may not permit changes once it's gone live.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the medium. Online platforms may publish immediately or within hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I request corrections or changes to an existing obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They'll do their best to make changes promptly.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to share your loved one's passing publicly, you can opt for a private or limited-circulation obituary. This might be suitable for small families or those who prefer discretion.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?

In general, it's best to obtain permission from the original publisher before republishing an obituary. However, if you're sharing it on social media or among close family and friends, this might not be necessary.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for a veteran?

Yes! When writing an obituary for a veteran, consider including their military service details, awards, and accomplishments. You may also want to mention any special recognition or honors they received during their service.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one's legacy.

How do I find old obituaries from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or local libraries that maintain historical records. Some online platforms also offer searchable databases of past obituaries.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's obituary?

Yes! Consider creating a digital archive of your loved one's obituary by saving it as a PDF or printing it out for safekeeping. You can also share it with family and friends via email or social media.

Is it appropriate to include negative information in an obituary?

In general, it's best to focus on celebrating your loved one's life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on negative aspects. Obituaries should be respectful and tasteful tributes.

Absolutely! Social media can be a convenient way to share news of a passing with friends and acquaintances. Just be sure to follow each platform's guidelines and respect any privacy settings.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

Taking care of yourself during this difficult time is crucial. Consider enlisting help from a trusted friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a funeral home or counselor if needed.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with your loved one's spirit and values.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

DOUBLE-check facts like dates, names, and spellings before submitting the obituary. It's also helpful to have multiple people review it for errors before publication.
