Bangor Daily News Friday June 17 1988 EM 63 land and less to the debatable charms of the city as visitors soon discover Instead of relying far entertainment upon such man-pade activities as amusem*nt parks movie theaters and shopping malls (always a source of entertainment for people-watchers) visitors to the northern woods must entertain themselves usually by hiking swimming boating or fishing Hunting an important way of life in the region follows later in the By Brian Swartz NEWS Advertising Staff Writer When most Americans think about Maine they associate the Pine Tree State with the granite shoreline of the central and eastern coastal regions Many Canadians view the sandy stretches of Old Orchard Beach as meaning to them Most of better-known attractions lie within a narrow band of land running the full length of Instead of relying for entertainment upon such man-made activities as amusem*nt parks movie theaters and shopping malls' (always a source of entertainment for people-watchers) visitors to the northern woods must entertain themselves usually by hiking swimming boating or fishing a fall So entertainment is people-powered instead of driven by electric motors Whether trolling the deep blue waters of the Rangeley Lakes walking along the Appalachian Trail while swatting mosquitoes or opening a speedboat flat out across the surface of Moose-head Lake visitors must bring themselves to their entertainment not vice versa Lakes mountains and trees dominate the land as pilots can testify The north woods appear so different from the air with a kalei-deoscope of colors sweeping across the forest Varying shades of green such a welcome color aftera long winter denote stands of pines firs and hemlocks and the colors are matched only by the myriad hues of deciduous leaves Trained foresters can tell one species of the coast from Kittery to Calais and perhaps opto 25 miles inland Yet Uie bulk of the geography unfolds north and west of the coastal region and a major problem for inland entrepreneurs has been reminding out-of-statevisitors about that fact A different Maine awaits visitors who venture north of Waterville and Bangor While not the last outposts of civilization these two cities stand at the edge of north woods a huge slab of landscape running hundreds of miles north to the Canadian border Forest operations shaped Maine in the past and the northern half of the state remains heavily dependent on the forests that march up hQl and down dale across Oxford Franklin Somerset Piscataquis Penobscot and Aroostook counties People are tied more to the Jakes and rivers Sunlight gleams on the flat stretches or casts rainbows through the mists raised near waterfalls Fish feed in the deeper cooler pools while wild animals dart along the banks while hunting and being hunted Along toe edges of ponds and in the hlackfly-plagued bogs stately moose chomp patches of lilypads and tromp with their ungainly gait through campgrounds and past astounded campers Shutters click auto-advances whir and more visitors take home photographic reminders of the monarch of the north woods Deer flit through the shadows occasionally standing by the side to give a Beacon Hill resident a true picture of wildness Black bears avoid men like Londoners avoiding the plague yet some lucky visitors catch a glimpse of largest predator Although cursed by deer hunters and sheep farmers coyotes pursue their prey with a distant nocturnal yipping and yapping to remind campers about just who does live in toe north woods Bed foxes venture dose to dvilization and bandit-masked raccoons tumble trash cans and put on a good show when fed Cheerios or other goodies Woods-wise campers know better than to mess with skunks but every year a family from New York or New Jersey finds itself with a malodorous dog and the nearest can of tomato juice is 50 miies away in Greenville or Millinocket Birds constantly fly from branch to branch with chickadees visiting the campgrounds and ruffed' grouse (the to Maine residents) exploding from cover to frighten unwary hikers The lonely call of a loon echoes across a silent lake at night and visitors wonder about the raucous laughter Visitors can challenge nature on its own level by riding a rubber raft through the whitewater stretches of larger rivers A few hundred dollars in vested in a canoe reaps a tremendous benefit in the north woods where a pond or lake waits around almost every corner of toe logging road Paddling across the waters of a still lake or pushing the canoe into a grass-hidden stream brings to life an appreciation for natural beauty north woods allow visitors toescape loa place where telephones do not ring computers do not transmit data and the most important decisions involve when to get up in the morning and what to do with the dav Time moves at the pace of nature not at the rigid demands of man All the trading on Wall Street cannot prevent water from flowing out of Chamberlain Lake and all the retail hustle and bustle of downtown Boston cannot convince a bull moose to step off the road and let the family camper pass Man a guest in the north woods and visitors are welcome to stay as long as they mat frrtiapkibftiAnly two expectations MfdfiK them are to! hiiwgiirllnuiii iMiUlMiwIhri The sun filters through a stand of white pines tree from another just by looking at plosion
