General Transportation Tech IIPerforms moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
General Transportation Tech IIIPerforms highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:Duties for General Transportation Tech II include:
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
General Transportation Tech III
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
- Trains other employees.
- Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Minimum Qualifications:Education: No education required.
Experience: GTT II = 1 year experience required*; GTT III = 2 years experience required*
- Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsem*nt or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
- The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
- Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
- Using of light and heavy highway equipment
- Maintaining a safe working relationship
- Follow verbal and written instructions
Additional competencies for General Transportation Tech III include:
- Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
- The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
- Maintaining a safe working relationship
- Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
- Prioritizing and organizing work assignments

- Using of light and heavy highway equipment
- Follow verbal and written instructions
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Required to work weekends and holidays.
- Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
- Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
- Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can report to work for emergency conditions [May Call Status] within 1 hour.

- Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
