Congratulations to Dr. Jin Chen, who passed his thesis defense on April 22, 2024. Dr. Chen's thesis topic was "Long-wavelength density fluctuations and momentum scrambling in the strange metal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x."Shown below with Dr. Chen are members of his thesis committee, committee chair, Prof. Tai Chiang; advisor, Prof. Peter Abbamonte; and Prof. Philip Phillips. Dr. Chen, aka "Mr. EELS", used momentum-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to study the strange metal phase of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. Best wishes in your future career, Dr. Chen!

#Autonomous_Healing of #Fatigue_Cracks via #Cold_WeldingPaper : https://lnkd.in/drztg6Gs : 19/07/2023 : https://lnkd.in/dSTVHH32 : 20/07/2023 : "Absolutely Stunning” – Scientists Discover #Metals That Can #Heal_Themselves"Here, we report that fatigue cracks in pure metals can undergo intrinsic self-healing. We directly #Observe the #Early_Progression of #Nanoscale_Fatigue_Cracks, and as expected, the cracks advance, deflect and arrest at local microstructural barriers. However, unexpectedly, cracks were also observed to #Heal by a process that can be described as #Crack_Flank_Cold_Welding induced by a combination of #Local_Stress_State and #Grain_Boundary_Migration. The premise that fatigue cracks can #Autonomously_Heal in #Metals through local interaction with microstructural features challenges the most fundamental theories on how engineers design and evaluate #Fatigue_Life in #Structural_Materials. We discuss the implications for fatigue in a variety of service environments."

We were saddened to hear of the passing of John Goodenough this week, aged 100. Credited as the brains behind the development of #LithiumIon #batteries, Dr Goodenough was the oldest Nobel laureate when he was awarded a Nobel Prize in chemistry at the age of 97.Goodenough contributed to laying the foundation for commercial rechargeable batteries. His work focussed on increasing cell stability and creating new materials which allowed higher voltages, so higher power. #Lithium technology is not just a critical tool in the struggle to reduce carbon emissions, but also enables reliable, long-lasting, rechargeable power in tough environmental conditions. Dr Goodenough’s legacy will continue to drive rapid developments in military, oceanographic, oil and gas, transport, industry and robotics.See more about the chemistry behind lithium-ion batteries: https://lnkd.in/e5pbiQr9#Battery #LithumBattery #JohnGoodenough

When the team is inspired by the quest for truth, the results are nice! G P Veldes and I Prokopiou, thank you for the harmonic cooperation! Our newpaper: M Birba, I Prokopiou and G P Veldes:"Evaluation of the effectiveness of energetic thermal electrons on the excitation of the ionospheric red 6300Å airglow", Phys. Scr. 98 095005 (2023) DOI 10.1088/1402-4896/acea47*****************************************************************************Abstract*****************************************************************************In this paper we use previously calculated ionosphere electron temperatures Tein order to estimate the 6300 Å (red) airglow intensity enhancements attributed to thermal electrons from the tail of a Maxwellian electron distribution of sufficiently increased electron temperature. Then, we compare our results with the relevant observed measurements and we comment on the quality of the comparison and the possible causes of the differences. We also calculate the airglow intensity characteristic rise and decay times and compare them to the experimental ones, and we investigate the origin of the electrons which excite the red airglow. In the end, we assess the departure of the ionosphere electron energy distribution from a purely Maxwellian one, and the role of the electron elastic and inelastic collisions with the other components of the ionospheric F-region.

"In this illustration of the superconducting material Eu-1144, the blue and magenta wave shown above the crystal lattice represents how the energy level of the electron pairs (yellow spheres) spatially modulates as these electrons move through the crystal. Credit: Brookhaven National LaboratoryTunneling spectroscopy uncovers the clearest proof yet that this exotic superconducting state of matter exists without a magnetic field in an iron-based superconductor.Researchers discovered an alternate superconducting state, called a pair density wave (PDW), in a non-magnetic environment, challenging previous understandings of superconductivity. This breakthrough in an iron-based superconductor that also exhibits ferromagnetism opens up new potential for superconductivity research and could revolutionize the field."https://lnkd.in/e4CqzXQc
